 COPIES & FAKES
On occasion, CAP insignia are replicated or reproduced in tribute to their historical significance. When collecting non-original copies, it is crucial that each piece is clearly identified and labeled as such to prevent possible misrepresentation. Collectors are urged to NOT purchase counterfeit insignia intentionally being passed off as authentic by unscrupulous sellers.

?? Unidentified Patches & Insignia ??
Details of these insignia are sketchy or completely unknown, and may not even be Civil Air Patrol.
If you have any info that could help lead to an identification, please e-mail me.
27th Cadet Training Squadron
"Warhounds"
Thought to be from MNWG's 2014 Encampment (12th CTG) but unable to confirm.
616th Composite CAP
"Air Operations, Our Business"
Certainly this is CAP, but from where?
"C.A.P." with winged-prop in oval
The Army Air Corps used a silver prop with gold wings insignia like this in WWII, while CAP's version was all silver.
Flight Commander stiched on white felt
This simple patch has appeared among goupings of CAP insignia several times, however its use is unvarified.
Gold Bullion Active Duty Stripes small on black wool
Gold stipes on black cloth represent 6-months active duty during WWII, but unknown if this bullion version is CAP.
Gold Bullion Button on black wool
This may be a manufacturer's product sample, or there may have been a specific reason it was made.
Honor Guard tab
While made for the US Army, it's believed this tab and similar variations may have been adopted locally for CAP use.
Large, Upswept Wings
This 4" tall patch resembles the metal and enamel WWII service hat badge and started appearing on eBay in 2007.
USAF Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol
This 3" x 4" patch appeared in CAP Unit Patches, Vol 2 in 1991 and has yet to be identified.

Misidentified Patches & Insignia (Not CAP)
Collectors may come across these patches and easily mistake them for being of CAP use when they are not.
60th Bombardment Squadron
Anderson AFB - Guam
That tri-prop inside a triangle at the top of the disk is very deceiving!
340th Combat Defense Squadron
Bergstrom AFB - Austin, TX
Patch from the early 1960s, they used the Civil Air Patrol motto: "Always Vigilant".
There are other versions that also display the same motto.
5010th Security Police Squadron
Eielson AFB - Fairbanks, AK
A disbanded USAF unit that used the Civil Air Patrol motto: "Always Vigilant".
U.S. Army Air Forces - Civil Air Patrol National Headqurters
This concoction of CAP's red tab atop the US Army Air Forces SSI appears in the "American Military Patch Guide" book series, purportedly used to identified someone at National Headquarters. This has not been proven.
Operation Snowcap
Not a winter-based SAR exercise, but an old patch for a winter scouting camporee. The absent Fleur de Lis typical of many BSA patches, wasn't required until 1973. There also was an 80's DEA program of the same name. Operation Snowcap later morphed into Klondike Derby.
Ted Man's Bomber Jackets
Chinese-made leather jackets in a variety of colors and styles from Tedman & Co feature this "Civil Air Patrol Emergency Services" patch prominantly on the right breast, and a smaller one under the back collar. [example]
Western States Association of Sheriff's Air Squadrons
This older stylized "S-wing" patch pops up now and then with CAP patch groupings. Being that one of the WSASAS' purposes is "to provide a means of cooperation with the Civil Air Patrol," it would make sense that members of the two organizations might trade patches with each other. Marksmanship or Shooter Proficiancy badges
These cloth badges were published in the very popular militaria book series, "American Military Patch Guide" by Morgan & Thurman as being CAP insignia. A former Nat'l Historian and former Nat'l Archives Currator both agreed they are NOT Civil Air Patrol. They could be ROTC, JROTC, or even US Army.
